A statement from President and CEO Audra Wilson
November 6, 2024
In the face of a deeply polarized nation, this election has brought profound emotions and urgent questions about how each of us is seen and valued. For many of us who identify as people of color, immigrants, members of the LGBTQ+ community, or allies in the fight for justice, this moment can feel jarring. But it is also a call to action and an opportunity.
The incoming administration, with Republican control of the Senate and the fate of the House of Representatives still looming, presents a unique challenge but a defining opportunity. In times like these, the Shriver Center on Poverty Law urges our lawmakers to continue to act fearlessly, holding steadfast to the shared values that uplift us all.
Here in Illinois, we are fortunate to operate in a state that embraces innovation and has been at the forefront of policies that can be replicated nationwide. Our mission extends beyond our borders and demonstrates the importance of modelling systems to dismantle the barriers that keep so many in poverty.
We know that people may be afraid, unsure of how to be seen, heard, or show up in an increasingly hostile environment. But silence is not an option. At the Shriver Center, we are showing up and standing firm against deepening racial and economic inequality. As members of statewide coalitions, we are a part of critical conversations. With our partners, we shape policy and ensure that those most affected by poverty are represented in the fight.
We see this moment as the call to push forward. Our history proves that we can thrive in adversity. Just as we strengthened our commitment to communities when legal services were under attack in 1995, we have a renewed resolve to stand alongside our most impacted groups.
Our call to action is simple, yet vital: together, let us channel the power of this moment to deepen our commitment to justice and to protect and expand our hard-fought wins. The Shriver Center will remain focused on using replicable advocacy strategies, litigation, and partnerships to uplift people most deeply impacted by poverty.
