What:
“Carry It Forward: Raising Our Voices to End Poverty” is the theme of the Shriver Center’s 2015 benefit, which raises funds to support the Shriver Center’s advocacy work on behalf of low-income people and communities.

Who:
For six decades, Mavis Staples has been the solid rock of American music. Alongside the family group she is so identified with, the Staple Singers, Mavis transforms herself as she goes. From the Delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s to the freedom songs of the civil rights era, to pop radio—Mavis has given voice to entire movements, and to eras.

Jeff Tweedy has been called “one of the most daring songwriters of his generation” and his band Wilco is “vital, adventurous… breaking new stylistic ground with each ambitious and creatively restless album.” (Salon.com) Tweedy is one of contemporary American music’s most accomplished songwriters, musicians, and performers.

Where:
Hilton Chicago, 720 South Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL

When:
Thursday, May 21, 2015
5:30-8:30 pm

Details:
The event will include a reception, dinner, and brief program. Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy will be interviewed by WBEZ’s Richard Steele, and with give a brief performance. More information is available at http://povertylaw.org/events/carryitforward.
