John Bouman, President of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty, has announced that Venu Gupta has joined the organization as its first Vice President of Development.

Gupta brings experience in leadership, program development, fundraising, and diversity and inclusion to the organization, having spent seven years as executive director of the Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms, where she expanded funding, programming, and outreach to the legal community. An active volunteer for social justice causes, she has served on the boards of several nonprofits including Apna Ghar, Giving Circle, Rasak Theater Company, South Asian Philanthropy Project, and Business and Professional People for the Public Interest. Gupta is a graduate of both Harvard Law School and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

In this senior management role, Gupta will provide strategic direction for the Shriver Center’s fundraising and outreach efforts, including individual and major giving, corporate and foundation relations, and events. She will also lead the expansion of a national major giving campaign in advance of the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2017.

“Venu brings strong leadership qualities, fresh vision, and energy to the Shriver Center,” said President John Bouman. “I am excited to have her skill, enthusiasm, and leadership on our team.”

“The Shriver Center is a nationally recognized leader in advancing laws and policies that secure justice and opportunity for those facing poverty,” said Gupta. “If we believe an individual is defined by her ability and not her circumstances, then we must preserve opportunity—especially for those living in poverty—and ensure they are treated justly. This crucial mission drew me to the Shriver Center, and to supporting the growth and expansion of its mission.”

Gupta will be based at the Shriver Center’s headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.
